I hope everyone enjoyed celebrating Father's Day as I did with my daughter and my son-in-law's family. As each Father's Day comes around, I feel a little sad and empty since my dad is not around more. My dad, Benito Salazar, passed on September 25, 2002 and I was not present at his passing. I was on the road to see him when my daughter and I received the call that he had passed. We were sadden that we didn't get to say good-bye. The last time I saw him was in the ambulance the day before; he had his Veteran's cap from the Korean War and gave me a thumbs up indicating that all was going to be OK but, it was not.
Me, my dad (Benito G. Salazar), and my daughter, Kristy
We, as children, always look to our parents for the many things we have learn in life. You know, I learned a lot from dad including standing on my own two feet in the darkest times of my life. I learned to fix things around the house, work on the car, run our businesses, hire and fire employees, learned the law, volunteer to serve the community, value education, and most important hold your head high when things happen. Gosh, I miss him! He was my pillar of strength!
He was not only my father but a wonderful grandfather to my daughter. My dad stepped in as a father figure when she needed him most. He was the biggest cheerleader to my daughter, Kristy. In fact, he was known as "Grandpa" to all her friends and their cheerleader too. He could get the kids to cheer for each other during all the games and events. My dad was so easily liked and loved by all the friends of my daughter to and he even cheered them on in their activities too.
I can not end this tribute to dads without some other pretty special dads that are also in my life.
Benjamin Salazar, my brother with his children, Bella and Dylan.
Tony, my son-in-law and my granddaughter, Emerson.
Archie Estes (Tony's father) and my granddaughter (his too), Emerson.
So I hope all those that have their fathers enjoy their presence and appreciate the time they have with them every day! Happy Father's Day ....Every DAY!
