What I have learned being a Grandmother...

Oh my gosh what a year!  I love being a grandmother!  Here's what I have learned:

  • Get up early and prepare for the day:  new bag in the trash can for dirty diapers; crib ready for naps; burp cloths still in use, so need a fresh one by the recliner for feedings; fresh water in the sippy cup; plenty of coffee ready for grandma and toys out and books ready for the day.
  • Relearn all nursery rhymes and songs.
  • Find ways to encourage eating meals including making funny noises and funny faces for entertainment in order to distract new foods.
  • Realizing that the old knees don't work very well so the exercise ball comes in handy.
  • Dancing with Emerson is a blast and she loves Zomba.
  • Going to the library for Lap Time, music classes and Gymboree for exercising the muscles of a child and grandma too!
  • Long walks with a good stroller and pointing out all things that God has made.
  • Shopping based on meals and nap times which means...super fast shopping!
  • Emerson is a cool child for shopping trips. My best shopping buddy.
  • Pointing at everything and looking at ourselves in the mirrors and making faces.
  • Wearing exercise clothes all the times because they are comfy and I can stretch and bend while working with Emerson.
  • Eating fast and potting fast for grandma.
  • Finally realized that the play pen is a great place to put a baby for quick trips to restroom or for cooking a meal for myself.
  • My house is one big play room which I love.
  • Nap time for Emerson can also be nap time for grandma or quickly do chores that need to be done.
  • Can change a diaper in the back of my SUV and have plenty of wipes & diapers for traveling anywhere.
  • Know all the restrooms that have diaper changers and are clean.
  • Know all the measurements for medication.
  • Have a good planner to record all activities.
  • Have a porch that has a swing and plenty to see to entertain a baby.
  • Decorate the home for the holidays and be child friendly or teach what can be touch or not.
  • Finally, have the energy and plenty of love to give my little partner...Emerson!!!!
  • I have learned to just have fun every day with Emerson, my grandchild!
  • Life is good!

Bicycling with Grandma

I hope one day I live to be my mother's age, she is 83 years young and look her on her three wheel bicycle with her dog, Precious!  Aren't they cute?  Of course they are!

I usually get up early on the weekends so I can get some walking or bicycling in before church but this morning, my mom said she'd like to ride her bike too, three wheels at that and would like to take Precious.  Though she went two blocks and then turned back home, it was still a good distance for her.  That is still exercise for her age. She hopes that weekend, she can bike further down the lake (the lake is to the left to this road). As you can see, Precious enjoyed the ride too.  Too cute!

After taking my mom back home, I continued my bike ride all over the neighborhood and then headed home for breakfast.  I love going off for a quick bike ride or a brisk walk on the weekends.  I try to keep my mom moving so she can continue to be healthy enough for the casinos! Ha ha!

How blessed we are to still have my mom around!

Until another time!

Next on my Bucket List....

This morning I was surprised to see a hot air balloon fly over my house.  Thanks to my daughter, Kristy calling me to go outside and look up and it was passing right over my house. I had been watering my yard early this morning so I had not answered my phone since it was inside the house until my mother brought the phone out to me.  I notice that I had missed two calls.  Of course, my first reaction upon seeing that my daughter had tried to called consecutively, I panicked since I thought that maybe something was wrong with the baby.  But to my surprise, she said  "mom go outside and look up toward the sky!" I was so amazed to see balloon so close that I thought it was going to touch the rooftop of my neighbor's two story house, it was that close!

Passing over my house.

Going over another neighbor's house, towards the lake.

Heading to the Lake.

Landing at the lake, behind this house.

I ran inside to grab my camera and here is what I captured!  Isn't it amazing!  It landed on Pflugerville Lake, which is behind my house.  It was at this moment that I decided that this is what I want to do for my birthday in October.  I 've done pretty much everything else why not this, ride a Hot Air-Balloon.  So stand by and check me out toward the end of October and see if I actually ride one. Get this, my mother was so excited that she said she would ride the balloon with me too.  This from someone who is afraid to fly!  We will see if my mom will do it with me!!

Refinishing Emmy's Toy Box

Hi everyone!  Not to long ago I went on a errand and I ran across a garage sale on my way back and found this wonderful toy box. I thought this toy box would be wonderful for my granddaughter, Emerson so I bought for next to nothing!  I have to say that it was a little run down not to say dirty too.  So, I put it aside and wrote it down on my "To Do" list for one of those days I had nothing to do.  Well, a couple of weekends ago, it hit me to get on it.

So I gathered my tools (sander, sanding paper, cleaning stuff to clean, breathing mask, polyurethane and a brush) and began working on it in order to turn this neglected toy box into a jewel.
After cleaning the toy box really good, I sand it and cleaned the sanding dust and proceeded to paint on the clear polyurethane.
Doesn't look bad from afar but...

Here it is up close.

It was dirty inside the toy box.

Even along the bottom of the toy box was dirty.

Here are my materials I used.
Here I go to sanding the toy box with my sander.  I love my sander!

Two coats of polyurethane did it for a finish like new.

Here is the finished product!  Not bad if I should say so myself.  This is a level 1 restoration project.  So easy anyone can do it!

Until next time my Friends!

Never ending projects!

Well, I finally did it!  I got my garage cleaned and organized! Yep, I finally put up two shelves to store some of my appliances that I don't have room in my kitchen.  Now they are handy and accessible when I need them.

Mind you, this was not a difficult project, just a medium level project that anyone can do if you have 1.) the patience; 2.) the drive; and 3.) the tools.  No, you don't need a man or aka husband or boyfriend to do this job.  You need yourself and confidence to do this job.  Here's how it is done:
1.  Look at your garage and decide what the shelves are going to hold and decide the length of the space in your garage and the location.
2.  Make a list for the materials.  For my project, I needed at least two boards 10 feet long and I selected 8 inches across.  Oh, don't forget the "L" brackets to hold up the shelves!
3.  I checked the materials I had on hand: drill, drill bits (to drill holes into the wall), measuring tape, screw driver (helps to screw the screws in place and then I use the drill to do the rest), hammer, pencil, screws for the wall, a level, and ladder.
These are the materials I had and the rest I went off to purchase.

Off I went  to the Home Depot with my list and bought the materials and came back home and began the job on Friday afternoon around 4 p.m.  Boy was it hot!  But, I was determined and I finished around 7 p.m. give or take.  Yeah, it took me some time due to measuring and using the level to make sure my shelves were straight.  Next, I marked where the "L" brackets were to go and then drilled to make the screws go in easier.  I don't have the upper strength that a man has, so I drill as a guide and it is much easier to put the screws into the brackets (this is what took more time, drilling).  When I drilled all the holes and then mounted the "L" brackets, then I could place the board on the brackets.  Finally, I was able to screw the bottom screws (without pre-drilling) it was easier to drill the smaller screws into the board.  That was one shelf completed! I followed the same procedure for the second shelf and the finished product, well take a look!  Not bad for a woman!
Notice the line I drew?  The line was drawn using my level to help me place the "L" brackets.

 The finished product!
My stuff is off the floor of the garage and the best part, the second shelf has my appliances that I need when I cook for my family/friends and I don't use that often.  I was pleased with the finished project.  Did I mention that this is phase 1?  My phase 2 is putting up a pegboard next month (budget) so I can hang my most frequently used tools I use along with extension cords, different tapes, the weed eater, blower, hedger and I am sure I will find other stuff that I use often.  Anyway, the whole propose of this project is to get organized and to let anyone else know that if I can do this, anyone can do it too!  After all, I am just a retired grandmother!

Until next time, see ya!

How to make home made flour tortillas....humm!

There is nothing better than eating home made flour tortillas!  However, this is something that people don't do any more because it is so easy to go buy a package at the store but they don't taste as good as home made ones, trust me.  So, I decided to show everyone how to make flour tortillas from scratch and by the old method.  No measuring of cups or measuring spoons but only by sight and hand measuring.  Here is what you will need and process to make great tortillas.

Here is what you need:  flour, baking powder, vegetable shortening and hot water.  You will also need a rolling pin and a griddle.

No measuring cups!  I use my hand to grab flour.  For this batch, I used 6 handfuls.

Use a nice size bowl to make the tortillas.

This is how I grab the flour.  I know, my hand may be a different size than yours but same technique.

This is about 6 handfuls of flour.  Don't know how much it would be using measuring cups.  I tried to measure the flour out by cups but each time it was different, so I gave up.

So the next thing is baking powder. Again, no teaspoon just the well of my hand and it looks good, say about teaspoon or so? I eye-ball it.
Salt is the next ingredient and I do the same thing, measure it by my well of my hand.  It looks like a teaspoon.

Mix the salt and baking powder together into the flour by hand.

Now the shortening!  I grab a handful, not the full hand but a good portion for the amount of flour I have.  To much shortening will make the tortillas crumbly so be careful.  Looks like 3/4 of a cup.

Now you mix it all together and it will appear like pie crust and you want it to be crumbly looking.

Now you add the hot water and mix with the hand making sure that all is incorporated just like a pie dough.  How much water?  Well enough to make it in a smooth dough.

Just like this!  Knead it to make it smooth.  Add more flour if it is sticky.  Looks nice!

Now make nice smooth flatten balls like these and now you are ready to roll them out.  I use a little flour which makes it easier to roll them out.  Notice I use a plastic rolling pin. You can use a wooden one or any other thing to roll out the tortillas.  You would be surprise what I have seen people use to roll out the tortillas,a broom stick is used by some people (of course they cut it to their preference).

In the mean time, get your griddle nice and hot just as if you were going to cook pancakes.  It needs to be nice and hot.  Too hot will burn your tortillas and a warm skillet will not cook your tortillas at all.

Don't worry if they are not round.  The objective of course is to make them round but a little odd shape is good too.  Don't get hung up on the shape. It will all go down in the same manner as the rest of your food, chewed up but so good!

One good way to judge your dough is if it bubbles up while it cooking, it is a good batch of tortillas.  See the back tortilla, the griddle was too hot but it is still a good tortilla!

Now here are the finished product with a little refried beans...hummm this is good!

Two tacos to go are ready!  Any volunteers to eat these?  Yep, my daughter, Kristy was ready and willing!

Well, that is the process to make flour tortillas.  Not a hard project but just practice the old fashion way. Of course you can buy the prepared flour mixture and get the instructions on how to make the tortillas from the back of the package, but this is the proper way to make them....eyeballing the ingredients!  End result, great tasting tortillas!  Enjoy!
Oh, I almost forgot, any left over dough can be put in a plastic baggie and used within 24 hours or the next meal.
